Joyce M. Whitson

Joyce  M.  Whitson Joyce Whitson, Manhattan, died Friday, April 10, at Meadowlark Hills Scenic House in Manhattan. She was 84.

She was born June 22, 1935, in rural Olpe, KS, the daughter of Mary (Phillips) and Vernal Grieder. She received her primary education in Lyon County one-room schools through 8th grade, then transferred to Emporia High School.

In 1957, she earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Emporia State University; in 1967 she received a Master’s Degree from Eastern Kentucky University.
She married Charles C. Whitson on Dec. 22, 1957. He preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1991.

Mrs. Whitson taught in Kansas high schools in Lamont, Hill City and Leavenworth. She was librarian and head librarian at Manhattan High School from 1968-1996.
A long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan, she served as a deacon, an elder, and a part-time staff member. She managed and worked with the church’s children’s library and catalogued volumes in the adult collections.

She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for women in education, and other professional organizations. She was a member of the local DE Chapter of PEO, and later joined the Manhattan Area Retired Educators’ Association. In addition, she was a long-time member of the Retired Seniors’ Volunteer Program.

Mrs. Whitson is survived by her son, Chris (Nancy) Whitson, Lawrence; her daughter Deborah Whitson, Manhattan; four grandchildren, Amanda Whitson, Lenexa and Clint (Jenny) Whitson, Lenexa; Whitney (Sam) Wempe, Topeka; and Charlie Harris, Manhattan; two great-granddaughters, Reagan Rose and Chandler Kay Wempe; and a brother, Clinton (Eunice) Grieder, Topeka.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband.

Memorial Service to be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs Whitson asked that memorials be made to the Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University or First Presbyterian Church.
