Arlene T. Bechtel

Arlene  T. Bechtel Arlene T. Bechtel, age 91, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Thursday morning, November 14, 2019.

She was born on July 2, 1928, in Ogden, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph P. and Florence A. (Stephens) Dowling. Arlene was a lifetime area resident and a graduate of the Sacred Heart Academy.

During high school Arlene babysat and worked at the Duckwall’s fountain and makeup counter as well as Rexall Drug Company and answered the telephone for the Conroy funeral home. Later she was a policy writer for Farm Bureau Insurance, assisted Don in their restaurant business, the Downtown Café, and owned and operated the Bluemont Liquor Store.

Arlene was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and deeply devoted to her faith. She was called on often to be a prayer warrior for others. She was a beloved wife and mother, the heart of her family, their teacher, caregiver, confidant and friend. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, family vacations and trips to Destin with Don. She was proud of her home.

On August 26, 1948, in Manhattan, Kansas, she was united in marriage to Donald H. Bechtel. They were married for 68 years. He preceded her in death on March 18, 2017.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, sisters Dorothy Drury, Helen McVey, Margery Voelker, Josephine Zoeller, Rita Ruhr and her son-in-law John Hardwick.

She is survived by her seven children: Donna Seidler (Rich), Manhattan, KS; Joleen Jordan (Wayne), Delaware, OH; Theresa Kientz (Kevin), Raymore, MO; Linda Hardwick, Eudora, KS; Jon Bechtel (Cheryn), Manhattan, KS; Tom Bechtel (Terri), Ponca City, OK; and Amy Bechtel of Manhattan, KS. Her twelve grandchildren: Brian Seidler (Becky), Brad Seidler (Christina), Melissa Kientz, Jarod Kientz, Kristen Kientz, Kyle Hardwick, Jesse Hardwick (Starr), Reece Kohn, Gavin Kohn, Allan Bechtel, Erin White (Nick), Jeremy Johns and her nine great grandchildren Ryan Seidler, Brooklyn Seidler, Dylan Seidler, Shiloh Hardwick, Pieper Hardwick, John Hardwick, Andrew Hardwick, J.J. Hardwick and Alexa Johns, her sister-in-law Joan Weiser and many nieces and nephews. She loved us dearly.

A Vigil Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 21st at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. Visitation will follow from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 22nd at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan with Father Kerry Ninemire as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery on Elbow Creek east of Manhattan.
