Ruth M. Houghton

Ruth M. Houghton Urda Ruth McKiddy Houghton passed Monday, April 29, 2019, at Meadowlark Hills. Ruth graduated from Wheeling High School, 1937 in Wheeling MO. After her graduation Ruth was accepted into the Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe MO. After graduation from college, Ruth moved to Kansas City Missouri to work.

During her work in Kansas City Ruth met her future husband, Manuel H. (Lucky) Houghton and married shortly after. They were married for two weeks prior to Lucky being drafted by the Army due to World War II. At that point Ruth changed jobs to work in a factory making supplies for the soldiers as many women did.

From this marriage they were blessed with four children; Paula Clark (Richard), Judy Roland, Jane Houghton, and Dr. Howard Houghton (Karen). She was also blessed with seven grandchildren Bill Roland, Amy Dieker, Rhonda Eby, Sarah Glanville, Scott Anderson, Keely Houghton, and Caleb Houghton. Additionally, Ruth has fifteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, and was an excellent mom and grandmother.

Ruth and Lucky moved to Manhattan, KS, in 1951 during the 1951 flood. After their children were older Ruth went to work for the Riley County District Court retiring in 1980 as the Riley County District Court Clerk.

Ruth enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing clothes for the children and all of the grandchildren. Ruth was an excellent cook and loved to make cookies, which the grandchildren and great-grandchildren will always remember. After she retired, Lucky and Ruth enjoyed traveling around the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. She mostly enjoyed their trip to the east coast seeing the fall leaves.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Republican Party, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Delta Omega Chapter, and many professional organizations.

Ruth was the oldest of eleven children and preceded in death by her husband, both parents Pearl and Delbert McKiddy, nine siblings; Frank, Jean Grimes, Delbert, Jim, John, Kenneth, Lois, Richard, and David. Ruth was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Richard Clark and Valerie Meek. Ruth is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great--great grandchildren and one sister, Honor Booker.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 6th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Melanie Nord officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:30 P.M. Sunday, May 5th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
