Erma Jean Leuthold

Erma Jean Leuthold Erma Jean Leuthold, age 80, of Manhattan, died Thursday February 21, 2019 at her home.

Erma was born on January 21, 1939 in Manhattan, Kansas to Donald and Marjorie (Visser) Hartner of Riley, Kansas. Erma graduated from Riley Rural High School, where she played basketball, was cheerleader, and homecoming queen. After high school she attended Washburn University.

She worked as head secretary for the Kansas State 4-H Club Office at KSU, which required her to stay at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson for two weeks during the fair. Erma worked as a bookkeeper/teller in banks in Washington, Kansas and Great Bend, Kansas. When her children were small she worked part time at Kansas State University and also typed Graduate Students’ Thesis. She worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service/Natural Resource Conservation Science, Plant Materials Center, for almost 40 years, retiring at the age of 73.

Erma was a member of the Ashland Community church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, Communion Stewardess, Church Board Member, and organist/pianist. She was also a member of the Ashland Church Ladies Aid, serving as treasurer, the Ashland Extension FCE Historian/Photographer, Fort Nightly Club Treasurer and Historian/Photographer, Lifetime Member of National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE).

On July 31, 1960 she married Larry D. Leuthold in Riley, Kansas Methodist Church. To this union was born two children; a son Mark Steven Leuthold (Ginger), of Manhattan and a daughter, Lisa Rae Casey (Michael), of Springfield, Missouri.

Other survivors include her grandchildren, Lynn Marie Hargrave (Trenton) and Michael Thomas Leuthold (Emma), great-grandchildren, Tyler Lane Hargrave and Madeline Elizabeth Leuthold; her sister-in-law, Karen Hartner Suther (Ralph); nephew Keith Hartner; niece Kayleen Hartner Classen (Donald); great-niece Kylie Classen and great-nephew Ancel Classen; and many relatives and friends also survive.

Erma enjoyed her family and attending their activities, as well as her flowers, photography, mowing her yard, and her teddy bear collection of over 50 bears.

She was preceded in death by her father Donald in 2002 and her mother Marjorie Hartner in 2003, and her only brother Harry Hartner in 2004.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Monday February 25, 2019 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday February 26, 2019 at the Ashland Community Church south of Manhattan, with the Pastor Paul Barkey officiating. Interment will follow in the Ashland Cemetery.
