Mary F. Rhoads

Mary F. Rhoads Mary Fran Warnock Rhoads, 62, of the Manhattan and Kansas City areas passed away peacefully early Sunday morning January the 13th 2019 with her adoring husband David at her side.

Born October 30, 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri, Mary was the youngest of four children of Robert Dudley and Frances Helen Warnock. She grew up in Roeland Park, Kansas with an abundance of playmates and friends. After falling in love with the Flint Hills she attended Kansas State University, where she continued to fall in love: it was here that she met David Rhoads. Three years later they wed at the chapel on K-State’s campus and were each other’s closest confidants, bestest of friends, and loving companions for the past 39 years.

Mary, a patient and kind-hearted woman, was a terrific and dedicated elementary school teacher and librarian in Junction City, Kansas for 33 years: first teaching 5th grade at Lincoln Elementary, and then later teaching as a librarian and media specialist at Washington Elementary. Mary was treasurer of the local chapter of the Kappa Kappa Iota professional teachers sorority, she enjoyed volunteering for the Kevin Coffey Memorial Blood Drive, and she organized children’s book drives for Junction City Public Schools.

Not only was Mary a daughter, sister, and wonderful wife, but she was a friend to all. Her sweetness was a currency which purchased the hearts of all who knew her, and we gladly succumbed to her gentle nature and the goodness that radiated from her soul. Mary could always be seen in a purple outfit or accessory, as she and her husband attended and supported every Wildcat activity and athletic event that they could, with men’s football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball being their personal favorites. Mary and David loved spending time with one another in between their active social lives. The two enjoyed taking long walks, traveling, trap shooting, and meeting cherished friends for dinner or coffee.

She is survived by her husband David Rhoads; two step-sons Ken and Steve Rhoads and their wives Sue and Dawn; five step-granddaughters Cheyenne Perry and her husband Justin, Sydney Rhoads, Lynda Rhoads, Amy Rosenthal, and Lisa Rosenthal; her two sisters Jill and Ruth, their husbands Jim and Sandy, and a brother Alan; an uncle Herb Barkow; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was welcomed into heaven by those who preceded her in death, her father Robert Dudley Warnock, her mother Frances Helen Barkow Warnock, her fraternal grandparents Ida Bernice and General Aln Dudley Warnock, her maternal grandparents Ruth and Frank Barkow, all of Atchison, Kansas.

Services will be held Saturday January 26, 2019 at 1:00 PM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2900 Kimball Ave, Manhattan, KS 66502.

In lieu of flowers please donate in Mary’s name to the Kansas Trapshooters Association in care of Sandra McAllister 959 SW 10th St. Macksville, KS 67557. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
