J. Albert Barr

J. Albert Barr J. Albert Barr, age 94, of Manhattan, died August 26, 2018, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

He was born September 24, 1923, in Downs, Kansas, the son of Michael A. and Emma (Robinson) Barr.

Albert grew up in Downs, Kansas, and worked for Boeing in Wichita prior to being drafted into the United States Navy during World War II. Following his military service he attended and graduated from Kansas State University with his bachelor’s degree.

On June 1, 1948, in Manhattan, he was married to Joy June Hemphill.

He taught math and shop in Cleburne from 1950 to 1954 and then moved to Manhattan where he worked Hardman Lumber, Central Mechanical and Smith Brothers Sporting Good prior to working for more than 20 years at McCall Pattern Company as the pattern machine envelope operator.

Albert was a member of the Zeandale Community Church. He was active in 4-H when the children were younger and always taught the woodworking class for the Kaw Valley 4-H Club.

He enjoyed woodworking, working outdoors and always had a large garden.

Albert was preceded in death by his wife Joy in 2014; by his daughter Lori Brodersen in 2003; and by four siblings: Lawrence, Opal, Lulu and Ruth.

Survivors include his three children: David Barr, Rodney Barr and Candace Teaford all of Manhattan and one granddaughter Bridget Brodersen.

Cremation is planned with private family graveside services at a later date in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday, August 30th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
