Donald W. Holt

Donald W. Holt Donald W. Holt, age 92, a lifelong rural Cleburne and Olsburg resident, died August 5, 2018, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan.

He was born May 29, 1926, in Cleburne, Kansas, the son of Alvin E. and Gertrude C. (Carlson) Holt.

Donald graduated from Cleburne High School and was a longtime farmer and rancher in the former Cleburne and Olsburg area.

On June 1, 1947, Don married his high school sweetheart, Ardyce Yantiss in the Cleburne United Methodist Church. Their very special romance lasted for over 65 years. “Granny and Grandpa” were always a team. Whether it was raising a family, farming, or even getting dressed, they were always of the same mind. Many of you will remember their matching western shirts they always wore to most events they attended. Even after Ardie’s passing in 2012, he would often tell stories about their life together. In doing so, he kept the memory of her alive for those lucky enough to hear of the times and love they shared.

He was a member of the Olsburg Lutheran Church, the Kansas Livestock Association and the National Corn Growers Association.

Granny and Grandpa loved to travel. They would take a trip each year with the Corn Growers Association to wherever the national convention was being held. Another favorite trip was to the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson where they would “camp out” in their stock trailer. During the fair week, they would enjoy walking through the exhibits, seeing shows, and welcoming kids and grandkids who wanted to join them. Grandpa also loved to spoil and spend time with his grandchildren. Whether it was taking them to Lady Cat basketball games, The Country Stampede, helping them with landscaping projects, or picking out the perfect hunting spot, he always made time. He was blessed to be in the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even his great-great grandkids.

Another of his greatest pleasures was the time he spent caring for his land and his cattle. He was an amazing steward of the farm he and Granny built together. He had a knack for knowing which crops would produce the best yields, and time spent in the fields was something he truly enjoyed. His cattle were a source of pride that he missed very much when life on the farm was no longer possible due to his failing health. Their farm was aptly named Holt’s Happy Hollow, and it truly lived up to its name. It was a happy and wonderful place for family, friends, neighbors and all those who were able to visit.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ardyce on September 12, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his three siblings: Ruth, Lois and Carl.

Survivors include his two sons: Wesley Holt and Cheryl of Grove, OK, and Dan Holt and his wife Shari of Olsburg, KS; five grandchildren: Tami Howland and her husband Jeff of Olsburg, Kari Fink and her husband Sean of Chapman, Kiffnie Holt of Manhattan, Becky Holt of Manhattan and Dusty Holt of Kansas City; four great-grandchildren: Taellor Hammeke and her husband Andrew, Bailee Roberts and her husband Trace, Kaylin and Colby Fink; and four great-great grandchildren: Maeby, Holt, Warryn and Nash.
