Gary D. Heskett

Gary D. Heskett Gary Dale Heskett, of Manhattan, formerly of Pataskala, Ohio and Brunswick, Georgia, where he met his wife to be when he was 12 and she 13, passed away on Wednesday June 6, 2018 at his home, after a nine month battle with cancer.

Gary attended the Glynn Academy High School in Brunswick, Georgia, and graduated with the class of 1973. He joined the Army right after graduating high school. While on leave he married his high school sweetheart, Teresa Harrison, on June 14, 1975. He was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia, that is where Gary and Teresa started their lives together as husband and wife.

He was stationed many times over seas in Germany. While in Kitzingon, Germany, their first child, Jason David Heskett was born on July 3, 1977, at the Wurtzburg Army Hospital. Gary and his family traveled back and forth from Germany and he was stationed in Fort Stewart, Georgia for a short while, then back to Germany for 3 years.

Gary was then stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. At Fort Knox, Gary and Teresa’s second child was born, Amanda Elizabeth Heskett, on November 12, 1981. The family was in Fort Knox until they returned to Bamburg, Germany in 1985 for 3 years. Gary loved to help people, he was involved in many activities in Germany and also was an assistant Webelos Den leader in Boy Scouts

He then was station at Fort Riley, Kansas, where Gary and his family found their forever home. They bought a house in Manhattan, and raised their children and their first grandchild, Mersadies Renette Heskett, who was Jason’s first born.

Gary fought in Iraq during the Desert Storm in 1991 to serve his country. He retired from the Army as a Sergeant First Class (SFC), after 20 years of service.

He was a hard worker both at work and at home. He enjoyed working in the yard, making sure everything was nice and kept up. He loved to garden. He was an avid Royals fan and watched every game.

Gary opened the doors of his home to any and all in need, from people to animals. He was a loving father and grandfather, as well as a loving pet owner to all his pets. His best friend was his dog, Prancer. He loved his family and spending time with them as much as he could.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Heskett; his children: Jason Heskett and his wife Tracy, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Amanda Shepard of Wamego, Kansas; his brother, Robert Heskett and his wife Judy, of Nashville, Tennessee; his sister Susan Massey, of Wamego, Kansas; his grandchildren: Mersadies, Preston, Kaylee, Natalyn, Riley, Emily, and Jackson; his nephews, Andrew Massey and Shawn Massey; and his many other family and friends.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Monday June 11, 2018 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. At 10:30 a.m. a procession will be formed to go to the cemetery.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday June 11, 2018 at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, Kansas 66503. Full Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
