Gwen A. Springer

Gwen A.  Springer Gwendolyn Allene Schofield Springer died peacefully at the age of 90 at Via Christi Village in Manhattan, KS on May 18, 2018.

Gwen was born October 5, 1927, in Manhattan, KS. She and 5 other children (3 being orphaned cousins) were raised in a 2 bedroom home. Her bedroom was the landing of the staircase.

Her parents were Fred Schofield and Irene Peak Schofield Lakin and husband Jack Lakin. She had two younger brothers, Chuck Schofield and Don Lakin, both of California.

Growing up, Gwen moved back and forth from Manhattan, KS to Anaheim, CA., taking the train each way. Her Mother lived in Kansas and her Father lived in California. She graduated high school in Anaheim

Gwen and Marvin Springer were married March 7, 1946 in Charleston, South Carolina, while Marvin was in the Navy. Together they had three children: Steven R. Springer, M. John Springer and Sandra Springer Plank. They raised their children in Manhattan, KS. She was involved in all their activities, which included Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, sports and piano lessons. She never missed an event. Gwen was a telephone operator at Kansas State University for many years.

She and Marvin enjoyed traveling and going to dances. They had many good friends that they would socialize with weekly for fun outings. There were many family picnics at the lake.

Family was very meaningful to Gwen. After her children were grown, she spent a lot of time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was generous and supportive and looked forward to every visit. She enjoyed many lifelong friendships in her life.

Gwen was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great?grandmother and friend. She will be deeply missed by many.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Marvin, her brother, Chuck, her grandson, Shawn Springer and her sister-in-laws Marian Lakin and Donis Springer Cameron.

Gwen is survived by her brother, Don Lakin. Her sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Dennis) Macey. Her brother-in-law and his wife, Neil and Sheila Springer, and another brother-in-law, Steve Cameron.

Also, her children and their families, including Steve Springer and wife, Kristine of Manhattan, KS, and their children, Mandy Springer and Dan Springer. John Springer of Manhattan, KS and his daughter, Amy Springer. Sandy Springer Plank of Topeka, KS and her son Darrin Plank and his wife Natasha.

Great Grandchildren: Dillon Blain, Burk and Reese Springer. Jade Springer. Cheyenne (Taylor) Fry, Raine (Chad) Davis and Elijah Springer.

And many nieces, nephews and friends.

A family graveside service will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018, at Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in care of Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave, Manhattan, KS 66502.
