E. Eileen Wood

E. Eileen Wood E. Eileen Wood, age 96, of Manhattan, died April 11, 2018 at the Via Christi Village in Manhattan.

Eileen Jones, born to Lou and Lena Jones on October 14, 1921, in Detroit, Kansas, a small community between Junction City and Abilene. She grew up in the area and graduated from Chapman High School with the class of 1939. She was baptized at the Sutphan Mill Church in 1939.

She taught in country schools for 6 years (5 years at Spring Valley, north of Chapman, and 1 year at Kellogg).

On October 14, 1947 in Columbia, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Leonard Wood.

Eileen and Leonard moved to Manhattan in 1951, where Leonard owned his own radiator shop. He preceded her in death on February 1, 1985.

She was also preceded in death by her sister: Gladys Knopp, her brothers: Elmer Jones, Clarence Jones, Leland Jones, Robert Jones, Francis Jones, and Elwood Jones.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Manhattan, the Ladies Auxiliary Order of Eagles, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Elks Ladies, and the Wakefield Museum.

Eileen is survived by her many nephews, nieces and other family members.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday April 21, 2018 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John’s Cemetery west of Wakefield.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Via Christi Village or the Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
