Shirley A. Hearn

Shirley A. Hearn Shirley Ann Hearn, age 82, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Thursday March 29, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, surrounded by family.

She was born on May 31, 1935 in Mt. Vernon, Missouri, the daughter of Wilmer and Vera (Moothart) Kingsley. She grew up in Mt. Vernon and graduated with the high school class of 1953.

On August 29, 1953 she was united in marriage to Robert Jennings. They had three children together: Scott, Teresa (TJ), and Jeff. They later divorced. She was married to Kelly Hearn on May 27, 1977 in Manhattan. This expanded her family with the addition of Kelly’s three children: Laure, Hollie, and Kelly Lynn. Kelly’s job took them to Texas twice, Ohio, and Utah, before retirement brought them back to Manhattan. She loved to be with Kelly and they had many adventures together including hunting, fishing, golfing, and traveling the country. One of their favorite places was Yellowstone National Park. He preceded her in death on January 18, 2004.

Shirley worked in many different public schools as a secretary in the places she lived throughout her life. Once she returned to Manhattan, she worked as a substitute secretary for the USD 383 school district. She always enjoyed being around children and watching them learn. She was a member of the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church in Manhattan.

Her family was very important to her and she always wanted to be with them as much as she could. She was always so excited when there was a new addition to the family. She loved to cook for family gatherings and the family knew that she would make her deviled eggs and special chocolate cake. She loved to be around people and entertain at her home. The family knew if it was their birthday, or a holiday, or maybe just Shirley wanted you to know she loved you, she would send a card with a note in it.

She was an avid Kansas State fan, especially the football program, cheering on the Wildcats whenever she could. Shirley enjoyed playing cards with her family and bingo with her bingo group. She had a love for breeding and raising dachshunds, including her most recent best friend, Razzie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilmer and Vera Kingsley, husband Kelly Hearn, brother, Dale Kingsley and his wife Helen, stepson Hollie Hearn, and special friend Jayne Hunt.

Shirley is survived by her son Scott Jennings and his wife Linda, daughter TJ Blair and her husband Matt, son Jeff Jennings and his wife Kathy, stepdaughter Laure Bagley, and stepson Kelly Lynn Hearn and his wife Susan. Surviving grandchildren are Chris Jennings and his wife Summer (Brendon and Noah), Eric Jennings and his wife Amber (Skylar and Blake), Mallory Bejster and her husband Quincy, Jordan Schinstock and her husband Mitch, Shannon Winrick and her husband Ryan (Kori), Adam Bagley, Ashley Hearn (William), and Kelly Christopher Hearn.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Friday April 13, 2018 at the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church, 835 Church Avenue in Manhattan.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday April 14, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1630 College Avenue in Manhattan, with the Pastor Susan Evans officiating.

Memorial contributions in memory of Shirley are suggested to the USD 383 Foundation. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
