Helen  Neill

Helen Marie Neill, born April 13, 1918, in Mankato, KS, died March 25, 2018 at Meadowlark Hills Community—3 weeks before her 100th Birthday.

She was the daughter of Margaret (Kelliher) and Leroy Lake. She moved to Miltonvale, KS as a child, and graduated from Miltonvale High school in 1936. Helen attended Brown Mackie School of Business in Salina.

She married James T. Neill (Tom, of Miltonvale, KS) in 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. They were blessed with four children: Patrick (Liz), Catherine Bliss (Roger), Tom (Kathy), and Sally Bridge (Mike). She had 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tom, brother Bernard Lake, sister Kathleen Lowery, daughter Catherine, son-in-law Roger, and granddaughter, Celeste.

Helen lived in Emporia, KS for almost 60 years. She was an Administrative Assistant at Emporia State University, retiring in 1980. Helen was actively involved in the community delivering Meals On Wheels, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Altar Society, 4-H Sewing and Foods Leader, Emporia Regional Quilt Guild (winning blue ribbons at the Kansas State Fair), Cub Scout Leader, a member of a Home Demonstration Unit, driving cancer patients to Topeka for treatments, American Legion Auxiliary, and served on the State Auxiliary Oratorical Contest Board. In addition, she loved to travel, play bridge and was an avid gardener.

Helen was a master seamstress and sewed many a piece of stylish clothing for children and grandchildren. Her knitting skills were unsurpassed, making Irish Fisherman knit sweaters for her children and grandchildren. Helen loved to attend her grandchildren’s activities and musical programs. Her Catholic faith was very important to her, and she attended Mass daily during her last few years in Emporia.

She was loved and will be missed by all.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, KS with Father Kerry Ninemire as Celebrant. Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2018 at the Miltonvale Cemetery in Miltonvale, KS.

The Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2018 at the Seven Dolors Church in Manhattan.
