Bernie Butler

Bernie Butler “It was a good ride.” Those were the words that Bernie Butler felt best summed up his extraordinary life. Bernie’s good ride ended on March 15, 2018 at his vacation home in Palm Desert, California. Born on March 4, 1937 in Topeka, Kansas to John Francis Butler and Virginia Camplin, Bernie married Sharon Lee Tremmel on August 26, 1967.

Bernie is best known for opening one of the world’s first Pizza Huts in Aggieville in 1960 along with Dick Hassur and Jim Nellis. He went on to open Pizza Huts across the country and remained active in the company until his death. Even though he had business interests across the country, he considered Aggieville the center of his universe, serving as the long-running grand marshal of the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. Bernie was an active booster of Kansas State University and the Manhattan community at large. An avid golfer, Bernie was able to spend his final moments with a view of the Bighorn Golf Course that he loved so much.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Sherry, of Manhattan, his children, Mark (Leslie) and Brenda (Joel), his brother David (Barb); and his sister Judi (Dan), and his grandchildren, Isabel, Owen, Neal, and Alex.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday April 3, 2018 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, with Father Kerry Ninemire as the Celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Monday April 2, 2017 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. A Prayer Vigil with the Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday following the visitation.
