CSM (Ret.) Paul E. Cornelius PAUL E. CORNELIUS

CSM (Ret.) Paul E. Cornelius, age 87, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Monday evening, February 19, 2018, at the Valley View Senior Life Center in Junction City.

He was born on July 6, 1930, in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, the son of Michael and Tillie (Beitsch) Cornelius. Paul was raised in New Brighton where he attended local schools graduating from New Brighton High. While in high school he played the position of halfback on the football team.

Following high school he joined the U.S. military. During his 32 year military career he served in numerous locations stateside as well as tours of duty in Germany and Vietnam. Throughout his military service he became a highly decorated soldier having received numerous medals and commendations including the Purple Heart. He retired in 1976, from Fort Riley, Kansas at the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

Following his military discharge he went to work as a mail carrier for many years and later did maintenance for the U.S. Post Office in Manhattan.

Paul was a member of the Harvest Baptist Church in Manhattan. Other memberships included the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans where he was a Past Kansas Commander. In addition to his numerous memberships he enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and square dancing.

On July 3, 1965, in Manhattan, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Christine White and she survives. Also surviving are his two daughters: Donna Jean Cornelius of Hollywood, FL and Susan Cornelius Day of Leesburg, FL. Five grandchildren: Melissa Brocato, Denise Wolff, David Day, Joseph Chai Tiramai (Karman), John James Tiramai and eleven great grandchildren: Taylor Scott, Brooke Scott, Aubrey Scott, Ashton Wolff, Bryce Wolff, Caitlyn Wolff, Cameron Wolff, Ryan Day, Braden Day, Owen Day and Destiny Tiramai. Paul is also survived by his sister: Dora L. “Dee” Huelskamp (Kenneth) of Bear, DE; a sister-in-law: Ann Strebig (Jeff), Welches, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews including Renee Lewis of Eagan, MN.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Edward, Charles and Michael Cornelius, two sisters: Georgia Shanor and Jane Sasaran and by two sons: Dwight and Joe Cornelius.

The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2018, at the Harvest Baptist Church, 2615 Farm Bureau Road, Manhattan with Pastor Stephen Henderson officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.
