Lawrence S. Kientz

Lawrence S. Kientz Lawrence Kientz, a long-time resident of the Junction City area, died peacefully Friday, February 9, 2018 at Valley View Senior Life care center.

He was born March 28, 1927 in Manhattan, KS to Charles and Alvina Kientz. The youngest of twelve children, he grew up on a farm South of Manhattan, attended area schools and graduated from Manhattan High School. He enlisted in the Navy during World War ll and was a Fireman First Class.

Lawrence met Janice Eisenhauer from Fairbury, NE after he and his future mother in law met. She told him she had a daughter he might like and invited him to Nebraska for a fried chicken dinner. Lawrence and Janice married on Sept. 4, 1949. They were inseparable until Janice died in 2012.

They moved to Junction City, and together they owned and operated Kientz IGA grocery store for 17 years. Upon selling the store, Lawrence worked as a State Park Ranger at Milford Lake until his retirement in 1990. Lawrence was an active member of the Zion United Church of Christ, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion, and was a charter member of the Sertoma Club in Junction City.

Lawrence was always busy and whistled while he worked. He loved gardening and being outdoors, hunting, being with friends and family, participating in church activities, and attended Kansas State football and basketball games for many years. Every Man a Wildcat!

He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Karlene and Terry Taylor, Abilene, KS; Kevin and Theresa Kientz, Raymore, MO; Kristie and Thaine Pryor, Overbrook, KS; 9 grandchildren, Kari Hall, Kyle Taylor, Kali Taylor, Melissa Kientz, Jarod Kientz, Kristen Kientz, Alexis Michel, Brooke Hiatt, Cassie Bugner; and 7 great-grandsons. His family brought great joy to his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Janice Kientz, his parents, Charles and Alvina Kientz; sisters, Mary Hefling, Amelia Turner, Waunita Seagren, Magdalene Horocofsky, Clarabelle Breed, Esther Story; brothers, Albert Kientz, Oliver Kientz, Howard Kientz, Emile Kientz, and Carl Kientz.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Zion United Church of Christ 1811 McFarland Road, Junction City, Kansas with Erik Graefe officiating.

A Pancake Feed and Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan, Kansas.

Memorial gifts may be given to the Zion United Church of Christ in Junction City, Kansas in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
