Marcelene R. Proffitt

Marcelene R. Proffitt Marcelene Rae Proffitt died peacefully Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in Manhattan, Kansas. She was 94.

Marcelene was born on November 13, 1923 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Leo Gustav and Florence Olive Linscheid. She graduated from Hutchinson High School and went on to attend Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science (now KSU) where she graduated in 1945. Marcelene then moved to Utah, where she earned a certificate in physical therapy and assisted with the war efforts. She completed her physical therapy residency training in Chicago, and later asked to return to Hutchinson to assist with the polio epidemic.

Marcelene married Richard Lee Proffitt in August 1947. They resided on a farm in Chase, Kansas where they raised five children and she worked as a PT at Rice County Hospital District #1 in Lyons. Marcelene was very involved in her community. She was an active member of P.E.O., the Community Presbyterian Church of Chase, and Pi Beta Phi fraternity. She also represented Rice County on the Multi-County Mental Health Board for several years and was a board member of the Rice County Hospital Foundation. Marcelene was an excellent cook, and in her spare time, she loved golfing, reading, playing bridge, and spending time with family and friends.

Marcelene will be remembered as an intelligent, ambitious, graceful woman and loving mother with a smile that would light up a room. She and Richard were avid world travelers. Inspired by him, a World War II pilot, she even obtained a private pilot license in her 60s.

Marcelene is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Dr. Ronald Linscheid.

She is survived by her children Rodney, Roger, Rebecca, Randy and Race; grandchildren Maggie, Miles, Dakota, Rafferty, Holden, Rachael, Betsy, Rebecca, Harrison, Douglas, Zackery, and Molly; and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Trinity Methodist Church in Hutchinson, Kansas on January 27th at 1:30 PM.
