Juanita J. Silva JUANITA SILVA

Juanita Silva, age 90, of Manhattan, died December 30, 2017, at Stoneybrook Rapid Recovery.

She was born September 14, 1927, in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Felica Silva.

Juanita moved to Manhattan as a baby and attended Seven Dolors Grade School and Sacred Heart Academy, graduating in 1945. She then attended Kansas State University and in 1949 earned her bachelors in Music Education with a minor in Spanish.

Ms. Silva was a high school music and Spanish teacher and had taught at Msgr. Luckey High School, St. George, Wakefield, St. Xavier and her last teaching job was in McPherson. Following retirement she worked remotely for Kansas State University as a Spanish Instructor.

Juanita was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, was a Cantor, Lector at Mass, gave Communion to those unable to attend Mass, was in the Parish Choir and had served as director of the choir. On Fridays she helped with the daily Mass in the Chapel, and had also helped with the choir at St. Mary’s Chapel at Fort Riley.

Juanita is survived by a large extended family.

A Parish Rosary will be held at 9:30 A.M. Friday, January 5th, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 5th, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Kerry Ninemire as celebrant. Interment will follow in Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Memorial contributions may be made to Seven Dolors Catholic Church or Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.
