Betty M. McCrary

Betty M. McCrary Betty M. McCrary, age 92, of Manhattan, died Sunday morning, November 5, 2017, at her residence.

She was born on May 25, 1925, in Lake City, Iowa the daughter of William H. and Sarah M. (Carskaddan) Hicks.

Betty graduated from West Palm Beach High School in Florida and received her B.S. in Education from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. She later earned her Master’s degree from Kansas State.

She was united in marriage to Dr. John D. McCrary on January 29, 1949 in Lake City, Iowa. In 1957 they moved to Manhattan where her husband went into medical practice and Betty was a homemaker. Following the sudden death of her husband in 1959, Betty was left to raise their two young daughters, Patty and Janet.

In the early 1960’s Betty taught at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Manhattan prior to setting up the Trinity Presbyterian Pre-School. She later moved to Ft. Myers, Florida where she taught Kindergarten for many years before returning to Manhattan in 1986.

Betty was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, the Chi Omega Sorority and Chapter FK of PEO. She also enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter: Patricia E. “Patty” McCrary of Manhattan and by two granddaughters: Sarah Mahan and Mary Chambless (Ryan), all of Dallas, Texas.

In addition to her husband, Betty was also preceded in death by one daughter: Janet Mahan in 1996 and by her brother: Alva J. Hicks.

Per her wishes Betty willed her body to the University of Kansas Medical School and no services are planned.

Her family will receive friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 9, 2017, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials have been established for the First Presbyterian Church and for the Johnson Cancer Research Center at KSU. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
