Dorene L. Weckerling

Dorene L. Weckerling Dorene L. Weckerling, age 84, of Manhattan, died Monday July 31, 2017 at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community – Wroten House in Manhattan.

Dorene was born on June 26, 1933 in Larned, Kansas, the eldest child of William “Bill” and Ruby (Salmans) Wittig. She grew up in the Larned and Burdett, Kansas area.

On August 9, 1950 she was united in marriage to Gordon K. Weckerling, on the Weckerling Ranch outside of Burdett and moved to Manhattan. He preceded her in death on November 2, 1998.

She worked many different types of jobs during her life. After she and Gordon moved to Manhattan, she worked for a chicken hatchery and a dry cleaner. Dorene then went to work for the McCall Pattern Company in December of 1974. She received many awards for her hard work and service to the company. She retired in June of 1995 to take care of her husband.

Dorene was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband she was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dale Wittig.

She is survived by her sisters, Vida Lee Bruntzel of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Faye Hogan of Garfield, Kansas and also her nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends and her very special cousin Sharen Durler Pflughoeft, who kept in contact daily with Dorene.

Funeral services for Mrs. Weckerling will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday August 9, 2017 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan. Interment will follow the service in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Memorial contributions in memory of Dorene may be made to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at KSU. Contributions may be sent in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
