Joseph "Joe" Barker

Joseph Joseph “Joe” Barker, age 74, died on Thursday July 20, 2017 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan, Kansas after a 4 year battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born on September 19, 1942 in Costa, West Virginia the son of Patrick and Sylvia (Walker) Barker. Joseph entered into the United States Army retiring after serving 33 years as a Master Sargent. He served in Vietnam & Korea and two tours to Germany.

Joseph was united in marriage to Thelma Jean Thompson in Costa, West Virginia on December 21, 1962. This union was blessed with a daughter: Patricia Ann.
After his retirement from the Army he became an over the road truck driver for many years. He then took a job at the Manhattan Hy-Vee doing most of the deliveries allowing him to get to know many in the community. He worked with Patti here as well enabling them to see each other most every day.

He loved boating, taking his grandsons and granddaughter fishing. He enjoyed traveling back to West Virginia with Jean to visit their families. He also made a hobby out of trading cars. He truly enjoyed keeping them clean and shiny. Above all, he loved being with his family, especially the grandkids.

Preceding him in death were his parents and 2 brothers: Jerry and Jim Barker.

Survivors include his wife Thelma of the home; daughter: Patti Thompson and her husband Tommy of Vassar, Kansas; 3 grandchildren: T.J. Lee (Anne) of Derby, Matthew Lee of Manhattan and Taylor Thompson, Vassar and 2 great grandsons: Joey Lee and Hunter Lee.

Graveside Services with full military honors will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday August 11, 2017 at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd., Manhattan, Kansas.

There will be no visitation as cremation was chosen.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at KSU in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
