Jean C. Bofenkamp Simmonds
Jean Charlotte Bofenkamp Simmonds, resident of Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan, KS, died of natural causes on April 5, 2017. She was 88 years old. She was a lifelong resident of Minnesota before moving to Kansas in December 2011.
Jean was born in Luverne, MN, July 22, 1928, the daughter of Ferdinand William Bofenkamp, MD, and Caroline M. (Hugel) Bofenkamp. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard Allen “Dick” Simmonds; her parents; her sister, Joan (Bofenkamp) Donahoe of Sioux Falls, SD; and her former son-in-law, Dennis Leisz, Hopkins, MN.
Jean is survived by her six children: Daniel John Simmonds, and his wife, Nancy Simmonds, Ft. Wayne, IN; Michael Richard Simmonds, San Rafael, CA; Mary Elizabeth Leisz, Minneapolis, MN; Kathleen Jean Oldfather, and her husband, Michael Oldfather, Manhattan, KS; John Patrick Simmonds, and his wife, Tina Marie Simmonds, Elk River, MN; David Richard Simmonds, and his wife, Maria Simmonds, Honolulu, HI; and former daughter-in-law, Joy Zellers Simmonds, Venice, FL. Other survivors include 14 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 6 nephews and 1 niece.
Jean graduated from Luverne High School, Luverne, MN, and from College of Saint Teresa in Winona, MN, with a BS degree. She met her future husband of 60 years while golfing at Madden’s Resort in Minnesota. They were married in Luverne in 1952. Over the next 33 years, Jean made a loving home for their six children. After Dick retired in 1992, Jean and Dick split their time between Minnesota and Naples, FL, continuing their lifelong love of golfing together.
As a high school and college student, Jean was an avid hunter, champion skeet shooter, golfer, tennis player, and classical pianist. But Jean’s life-long passion was her children and grandchildren. She took great pride in their accomplishments and was generous with her time and her love. She will always be remembered for her fabulous cooking and comfortable home. She learned the grace of humility from her parents and showed us daily that spirituality is nothing more nor less than caring for others.
A Mass of the Christian Burial and Inurnment will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday July 1, 2017 at the Chapel in the Calvary Cemetery, Mankato, MN.
