Carol S. Varelman

Carol S. Varelman Carol Sue Hartung Shane Varelman died on Friday, March 17, 2017, in Topeka, after having suffered a stroke. She was 72 years old.

Carol was born February 15, 1945 in Junction City, Kansas to Edward and Ethlyn (Callison) Hartung. She grew up in Junction City and graduated from Junction City High School in 1963.

On February 16, 1963, she married Warren Shane. They had four children and divorced after a 27 year marriage. She later married David Varelman and divorced after about 10 years.

She was very involved in the activities of her children and volunteered for many activities related to children. She worked as a daycare provider mostly in her home and also for a short time at a Topeka daycare center. She was a faithful member of Harvest Baptist Church in Manhattan. Prior to that, she attended First Christian Church in Junction City, where she served in many capacities.

She loved square-dancing for many years and met many friends in different clubs. She impacted many lives, especially children's lives, since she was always working with or volunteering in children's program. She volunteered in Sunday School, Nursery Church, VBS, 4H, Bus Ministry, Youth Group, Church Camp, Room Mother, and PTA. Her home was always open to children in need. She and her family hosted several foreign exchange students, in addition to a few local children who stayed in her home for extended stays.

Carol is survived by her ex-husband and his wife, Warren and Jeanne Shane; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Jacque Shane of Alta Vista, Ks; her daughter and son-in-law, Shari and Mike Augustine of Edwardsville, Ks.; her son and caretaker, Kevin Shane of Junction City, Ks.; her daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Tony Fields of Topeka, Ks., her sister, Mary Shane of Junction City, Ks.; her nephew and wife, Brant and Liz Shane; six grandchildren, Jesse Shane, Mathew Shane, Danielle Beamer, Allison Augustine, Michaela Augustine, and Cole Fields; a great grandson, Odynn Beamer, and a great niece, Cadyn Shane.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother-in-law, Larry Shane.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Saturday March 25, 2017 at the Harvest Baptist Church, 2615 Farm Bureau Road in Manhattan.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday March 27, 2017 at the Harvest Baptist Church, with Pastor Stephen Henderson officiating. Interment will follow the service in the Fairview Cemetery east of Junction City.

Flowers and memorial contributions may be sent to Harvest Baptist Church. The family has designated a memorial fund for Carol Varelman Children’s Scholarships.
