Norma W. Nordgren
Norma W. Nordgren, age 77, of Manhattan, died January 29, 2017, at Stormont Vail Healthcare in Topeka.
She was born March 14, 1939, in rural Olsburg, Kansas, the youngest of 4 sisters, the daughter of John and Alice (Tibbetts) Webster.
She was a bright and inquisitive student who skipped a grade and graduated one year early from Olsburg High School. Throughout her working career she demonstrated her family's farming work ethic and dedicated 25 years to Charlson and Wilson Insurance where she was mentored by J. Robert Wilson. She later managed commercial accounts for Universal Insurance prior to embracing her entrepreneurial spirit and launched Nordgren Insurance Agency, a Manhattan women owned business for 10 years, and later retired in 2015 from the United States Census Bureau.
Norma was raised in the Olsburg Lutheran Church and later the First Lutheran Church of Manhattan. On December 23, 1959, in Olsburg, Kansas, she married the love of her life B. Duane Nordgren. She lived a life of service to her community, as an active leader of Pilot Club locally leading Meals on Wheels and co-chairing the Pilot Club national convention. Determined to help others she ran for Riley County Clerk and was active in Citizen’s Council and was passionate about the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Norma was a Kansas State Loyalist from original stadium season ticket holder of 1968 to proud Mother of 2 K-State Alums. She and Duane lived a loving and full life enjoying the outdoors camping and traveling all around North America or just down highway 24 to Wamego’s Friendship House weekly.
Mr. Nordgren survives of the home. Additional survivors include two children: Brent Duane Nordgren and his wife Linda of Danville, CA, and Sherri Nordgren of Leawood, KS; two grandsons: Bryce Duane and Björn Alec Nordgren; brother in law Lauretz Rasmussen of Frankfort, KS; sister in law Lorraine Hirsch of Manhattan; and 12 nieces and nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her three sisters: Lucille Rasmussen, Evelyn Jones (Lowell), and Louise Area (Don); brother in law Lester Hirsch; and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jerry Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the Yorgensen-Meloan Londeen Funeral Home.
