Jo Ann H. Edwards
Jo Ann H. Edwards, age 92, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Sunday morning, October 23, 2016, at Meadowlark Hills-Bramlage House.
She was born on November 4, 1923, in Springfield, Missouri the daughter of Joseph Otto and Velma Adeline (Howerton) Harjung. Her father was tragically killed when Jo Ann was just two years old. Her mother later married Kenneth Thomas and together they lived in numerous communities prior to settling in Manhattan in 1937.
Jo Ann was a 1941 graduate of Manhattan High and graduated from Kansas State Agricultural College in 1945. Jo Ann was an avid K-State fan and enjoyed attending games and numerous Kansas State activities with her family and freinds.
On May 17, 1945, at the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan, she was united in marriage to Ray N. “Buzz” Edwards, Jr. They made their home in Manhattan where her husband was a funeral director with the Burliew-Cowan Funeral Home and Jo Ann was a homemaker. In 1965 they purchased an interest in the funeral home and the funeral home name was changed to Burliew-Cowan-Edwards Funeral Home. It was shortly thereafter that Jo Ann received her Assistant Funeral Directors License which she was always very proud of and still held. The funeral home is now known as Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home and up until just recently Jo Ann enjoyed helping on funerals at both the funeral home and at churches. Professionally she was a member of the Kansas Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
Jo Ann’s outgoing personality made her a beloved friend to just about everyone who knew her. Always dressed to perfection, and usually in her favorite color pink (or K-State purple), she was a beautiful and elegant lady.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and served on numerous committees over the years. Jo Ann held lifetime memberships with the KSU Alumni Association, Manhattan Area Council PTA and the VFW Post 1786 Auxiliary. She was also a member of the American Legion Post 17 Auxiliary, AARP, Alpha Sigma Alpha Social Sorority, KSU Presidents Club, PEO Chapter BD, Order of the Eastern Star, Domestic Science Club (Past President), United Commercial Travelers Auxiliary (Past Grand Counselor of Kansas) and the Manhattan Jaycee Janes (Past President). Upon moving to Meadowlark Hills in 2007, she soon became quite active there in numerous capacities which included being an Ambassador and serving as a mentor to gerontology students from Kansas State.
Jo Ann is survived by her two children: Barbara Harris (R. Lee), Leawood, KS; and Blair Ray Edwards (B.J.), Coffeyville, KS. Also surviving are her five grandchildren: Crystal Joelle Harris, Leawood, KS; Charity Brianne Trotter (Scott), Gladstone, MO; Deidra Kay Edwards, Oklahoma City, OK; Cameron Ray Edwards (Shanele), Liberty, KS; and Charles Lee Edwards (Sasha), Wichita, KS. Eight great grandchildren: Dalton Ray Harris, Noah Ray Edwards, Zeke Edwards, Hayslee Edwards, Atlas Trotter, Hadassah Edwards, Blakely Edwards and Astraea Trotter. Jo Ann is also survived by her dear friends: Judi and Tom Boley, and Kip Williams, all of Manhattan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband: Ray N. "Buzz" Edwards, Jr. in 1995.
The family will receive friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 27, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan with Reverend Melanie Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery.
