Ethel M. Chapman

Ethel M. Chapman Ethel M. Chapman, age 103, of Keats, Kansas, died Thursday, October 20, 2016, at her residence.

She was born on February 18, 1913, south of Manhattan, Kansas in the Sunnyside neighborhood the daughter of Robert and Lena (Oesterhaus) Graham. Ethel attended school in a one room school house at Sunnyside and was a graduate of Manhattan High School. Following her high school graduation she attended business school at the Sacred Heart Academy in Manhattan.

On September 8, 1938, in Marysville, Kansas, she was united in marriage to Alton C. Chapman. They spent the first six years of their marriage traveling to various worksites throughout western Kansas where Alton helped build roads. In 1944, they moved to Keats, Kansas where her husband took over the ownership and operation of the Chapman’s Conoco Service Station. While her husband operated the service station, Ethel devoted her time to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker. The service station closed in 1991 at the time of Alton’s death, but has remained in the family to become a treasured and well known landmark in Keats.

Ethel was a member of the Keats United Methodist Church and the Keats United Methodist Women. In her younger years she enjoyed horseback riding. She also enjoyed vegetable gardening, crocheting, and chocolate, and when she had a quiet time to herself she enjoyed playing the piano. Her family was her true passion thoroughly enjoying time with them, especially doting on her grandson and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter: Marcella Gocken and her husband Ron, her grandson: Darrell Gocken and his wife Amanda, and two great grandchildren: Brandy and Dillan Gocken, all of Keats, Kansas.

Ethel was preceded in death by her husband on April 28, 1991, by her two sisters: Bertha Graham and Edith Dustin and by her three brothers: Rollin, Walt and Ellis Graham.

The family will receive friends during a visitation from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Kevin Larson officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.
