Merle Shogren

Merle Shogren Merle Shogren, 89, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Friday morning October 7, 2016 at the Bethany Home in Lindsborg, Kansas.

Merle was born on November 20, 1926 in Lindsborg, Kansas, the son of Howard and Bernice Shogren. He graduated from Lindsborg High School. Merle served in the Navy Air Force during WWII. He was a graduate from Bethany College and received his Master’s Degree in Biochemistry from Kansas State University in 1954.

On December 13, 1974 he was united in marriage to Marilee Gilman.

Merle was employed by the USDA Agricultural Research Service: Winter Wheat Quality Laboratory from 1954 to 2000. After retirement he was retained as a consultant to the Grain Quality Structure Research Unit, Engineering Research Unit, and Hard Winter Wheat Laboratory.

He was active with Wheat Breeders to improve Hard Winter Wheat quality by testing and end-use quality baking and also was the chief baker and dough rheology expert for Hard Winter Wheat Quality Lab. Merle co-authored annual reports that were distributed throughout the Hard Winter Wheat community for improving wheat quality. Merle also had 117 professional publications in peer-revised journals during his career. He remembered fondly his travels to Sweden to assist with baking practices adopted in their experimental baking laboratory.

Merle’s daily visits with his many friends and visiting over a cup of coffee were special to him, and he always had a smile for everyone. He loved to golf, was very active in his woodworking, and like to travel. The highlight of his travels was to Washington DC this year, with the Kansas Honor Flight - Wamego High School and his high school friend, Dylan Louis Campbell, from Wamego, Kansas.

Surviving are his step-children: Patricia ”Tish” Collins (Todd), Jeff Hartigan (Patti), Greg Gilman (Freida). His grandchildren: Bret, Crystal, Johnny, Justin, and Josh; his great-grandchildren: Allan, Michael, Jamere, Raziel, Kaily, Sida, and Jace. He also is survived by his brothers: Harlan Shogren (Jeanette) of Lindsborg, Kansas and Orin Shogren (Dorothy) of Salina, Kansas; sister-in-law, Darline Shogren of Topeka, KS, and his 16 nieces and nephews.

Merle was preceded in death by his wife Marilee; his brother, J Glen Shogren; sisters: Marian Richardson (Rusty), Martha Lee Gillihan (Ralph), Arcel Ireland (Max); his step-son, Jim Hartigan; and his nephew, Dale Shogren.

Inurnment will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday October 14, 2016 at the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday October 14, 2016 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Bill Bushbaum officiating.
